Utility, resonance and expression are individually addressed and aligned into design. At its most evocative, architecture has the potential to embody symbolism, evoking memory and inspiration.

Each individual inhabits spaces daily; routinely, familiarising themselves within their uniquely constructed environment. Personal experiences construct emotional attachments and significance upon the built form and space. The built form within the city continually evolves; construction and demolition reshape the built environment. Realignments are necessary, with the historical significance of spaces become subsumed into new forms. Residual spaces offer reminders to the past, which become un-utilised and eventually forgotten.
---
Its ‘panopticon’ design was devised by Jeremy Bentham, the philosopher and philanthropist, and was later used for other English penal institutions. At its centre was the Governor’s House, which allowed prison guards to keep watch over 1,500 transportation prisoners housed in separate cells in the surrounding pentagonal blocks.

The choice to construct the prison has left its scars upon the area (some are subtly noticeable). Street layouts and building positions have been affected to the present day owing to the previous land tenancy. As well as this, the personal decisions of the prisoners who occupied the prison lead to confinement and eventual deportation.

The intervention seeks to provide a tension to the space, the implied movement and freedom of water, formulated through tessellating line geometries; working in contradiction to the actuality of the form itself. The rope lines are in stasis and constrain space making space difficult to inhabit. This alludes to constriction and confinement, whilst still evoking the inevitable exodus across the seas.

Materials: 5km of polytubing (3mm), Phosphorus Blue powder, PVA Glue, This installation is the latest in a stunning series by architects Niko Japaridze and Christopher Smith of Architects of Invention located the former moat of the Millbank Penitentiary. The architects lined the moat with metallic paper to investigate a number of exciting spatial concepts using reflections and luminosity. Luminous Depths encourages an inordinately high level of visibility the effect is essentially to open up of spaces that would have traditionally been hidden either entirely, or partially, from public view. Residents have complimented the architects saying the attractions have made places in between come alive.

---

In addition to charting a visual approach, the Architects of Invention are looking at the motivation behind applied design and the potential shifts in attitude and behaviour these new concepts may well create in public. Luminous Depths explores the possibilities of applying reflective material on the space in front of Wilkie House, wrapping all surfaces of the space with aluminium foil lining (80m x 6m x 1.5m) thereby creating a reflective and visually interesting, yet symbolic, meaning to an otherwise unoccupied territory and period of history. By utilising a minimum depth of material intervention, the space is perceptually transformed from its initial state to one of new interpretation.
', 'program' => 'self-adhecive tinfoil', 'location' => 'Curreton Street, Millbank, London, UK ', 'area' => '480', 'budget' => '£2k', 'consultants' => '', 'awards' => '', 'year' => '2012', 'image' => '7c34d7077b749df6223ce39eec9cc619.png', 'pdf' => 'AI Works_Luminous Depths.pdf', 'team' => 'Dimitri Chaava,Nikoloz Japaridze,Christopher Smith', 'created' => '2013-12-12 18:50:52', 'modified' => '2024-02-24 16:03:26', 'is_selected' => null, 'photographer' => '', 'locale' => 'eng' ), 'Status' => array( 'id' => '5', 'title' => 'Built', 'created' => '2013-10-14 14:57:39', 'modified' => '2019-05-14 10:35:50' ), 'Image' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 1 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 2 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 3 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 4 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 5 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 6 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 7 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 8 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'titleTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'contentTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'projectTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'locationTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'programTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'teamTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'Category' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ) ), (int) 1 => array( 'Project' => array( 'id' => '87', 'order' => '58', 'slug' => 'liquid memories ', 'name' => 'Liquid Memories ', 'project' => '', 'client' => 'London Festival of Architecture 2008', 'status_id' => '5', 'content' => '

Art Installation for the London Festival of Architecture, composed of illuminating tessellating wires.

The act of creating architecture seeks to rationalise space(s) through the delineation of boundaries.

', 'program' => 'self-adhecive tinfoil', 'location' => 'Curreton Street, Millbank, London, UK ', 'area' => '480', 'budget' => '£2k', 'consultants' => '', 'awards' => '', 'year' => '2012', 'image' => '7c34d7077b749df6223ce39eec9cc619.png', 'pdf' => 'AI Works_Luminous Depths.pdf', 'team' => 'Dimitri Chaava,Nikoloz Japaridze,Christopher Smith', 'created' => '2013-12-12 18:50:52', 'modified' => '2024-02-24 16:03:26', 'is_selected' => null, 'photographer' => '', 'locale' => 'eng' ), 'Status' => array( 'id' => '5', 'title' => 'Built', 'created' => '2013-10-14 14:57:39', 'modified' => '2019-05-14 10:35:50' ), 'Image' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 1 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 2 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 3 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 4 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 5 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 6 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 7 => array( [maximum depth reached] ), (int) 8 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'titleTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'contentTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'projectTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'locationTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'programTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'teamTranslation' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'Category' => array( (int) 0 => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ) ), (int) 1 => array( 'Project' => array( 'id' => '87', 'order' => '58', 'slug' => 'liquid memories ', 'name' => 'Liquid Memories ', 'project' => '', 'client' => 'London Festival of Architecture 2008', 'status_id' => '5', 'content' => '

Art Installation for the London Festival of Architecture, composed of illuminating tessellating wires.

The act of creating architecture seeks to rationalise space(s) through the delineation of boundaries.

Materials: 5km of polytubing (3mm), Phosphorus Blue powder, PVA Glue,
