Chartersgate Villas

The dwellings each have a number of detached outbuildings in their grounds as well as various access drives which provide access to adjacent properties. Both houses are accessed from a private drive via the public highway (Hancocks Mount); the adopted road also serves another private road which leads to the old DeBeers Industrial Estate containing Charters, a listed building, which has recently been restored to residential use to include two new blocks of sixteen apartments, one of which dominates the eastern boundary of the site.

The site lies within, albeit on the edge of, the Green Belt with land to the north and west being part of the wider residential settlement area and therefore outside the green belt.

To the east and south are the more open grounds of Charters which is within the green belt.

The proposed scheme is designed in a contemporary architectural style. Its volumetric composition reflects the characteristics of the sloping landscape. The progression of floor plans follows the functional sequence of the internal organisation. The layout opens up to the Southern aspect in order to embrace the views and capture the sunlight. The contemporary style of the proposed scheme reflects that of Charters with it’s ‘Art Deco’ white facades, orthogonal volumetric composition, flat roofs and glass balustrades.
